Writers Who Cross Borders

The "PEN Centre of German-Speaking Writers Abroad"

In 1934, German authors who escaped Nazi persecution

and settled in the US, among them Heinrich and Thomas Mann,

Lion Feuchtwanger, Anna Seghers, Ernst Toller, Stefan Zweig

and Alfred Döblin, established the "German PEN Club in Exile."

It united the most important writers in exile and represented

the repressed and oppositional literature of the "other Germany."

After the war, it continued its work under the name of

"PEN Centre of German-Speaking Writers Abroad" - until today.

Its members have the most diverse biographies but share a

commitment to defend free speech and solidarity with

politically oppressed writers and journalists.

In 2009, for the 75th anniversary of its formation

the Centre published an anthology with contributions

 by its current members under the title:

Nachgetragenes (Addenda)

Seventy-five Years PEN Centre of

German-Speaking Writers Abroad

(edited by Gabrielle Alioth and Hans-Christian Oeser)

The volume was launched at the Brecht-Haus in Berlin

in June 2009 and has since been presented in Amsterdam,

Paris, Zürich, Dublin, London, Köln and Solingen.

To conclude this year of remembrance and celebration

of the literary work of its present members the Villa Aurora

invited the PEN Centre to an evening of readings and discussion.

Amongst the members present will be Renate Ahrens, Gabrielle Alioth,

Irmgard Hunt, Cornelius Schnauber et al.

The event was made possible thanks to the generous support of

the Consulate General of Switzerland in Los Angeles,

the Goethe-Institut Los Angeles, and Villa Aurora.

3sat-TV wird morgen Samstag 3.April um 22.00 den Film

von Lilly Engel ueber die Villa Aurora senden.

Im Anschluss daran den Fernsehfilm ERFOLG (1990)

in drei Teilen: Samstag bis Montag jeweils um 22.30 Uhr.

Közölyaprak ist in Los Angeles im Exil. Er fährt

katastrophal Auto - er hat es erst vor Kurzem gelernt

 -, und sein Englisch mit starkem Akzent hat er sich

selbst beigebracht. Jetzt ist der Schriftsteller im

Exil und zu Gast in der "Villa Aurora" in Los Angeles.

Geflüchtet vor Gefängnis und Folter, kann er nun

endlich halbwegs unbeschwert leben und arbeiten.

"Ich fühle, dass ich in meiner Heimat nicht frei

sein kann, aber hier auch nicht richtig", sagt er.

"Ich glaube, das ist das Exil-Gefühl - wenn man

mit seinen Gedanken ständig in der Heimat ist,

kann man nicht frei sein". Die "Villa Aurora"

gehörte einst Marta und Lion Feuchtwanger,

dem von den Nationalsozialisten verfolgten

deutschen Schriftstellerpaar. In den 1930er

Jahren wurde dieses "Kulturdenkmal" des Exils

"Deutsch-Kalifornien" genannt, denn die "Villa

 Aurora" war zum Treffpunkt vieler Künstler und

 Intellektueller geworden. Zu den Gästen gehörten

 unter anderen Bertold Brecht, Thomas Mann,

Fritz Lang, Arnold Schönberg, Marlene Dietrich

und Kurt Weill.

Heute bietet die "Villa Aurora"

Literaten und jungen Künstlern einen freien

Schaffensraum, gedanklichen Austausch und neue

Inspirationen.  Neben Zeynel Közölyaprak begleitet

der Film den preisgekrönten bulgarischen

Schriftsteller Ilija Trojanow und den Künstler

Kai Schmiemenz während ihres Aufenthaltes in dem

paradiesisch gelegenen Haus am Pazifik. Ergänzt

wird der Film von historischen Aufnahmen und

Interviews mit Marta Feuchtwanger und Hilde

Kahn, der Sekretärin von Thomas Mann. (ARD/WDR)
