Jud Süss - Film ohne Gewissen, premiering at the Berlin Film Festival next month (Presseheft here). Starring three of the biggest names in contemporary German cinema: Tobias Moretti, Martina Gedeck and Moritz Bleibtreu. See also earlier blogposts of September 8th 2009, July 2nd 2009 and March 21st 2009 for further discussion. Reviewed in Spiegel here (’New Jud Süss Flops as Faustian Tragedy’). Also Edgar F.’s paper at IFS 2005. Upcoming on April 22nd 2010 at the Wiener Library in London: Dr. Daniel Wildmann of the Leo Baeck Institute London will give a talk entitled ‘The Ambivalence of Disgust - Jud Süss in Nazi Germany’.   [Addendum: Last night I attended Daniel Wildmann’s instructive talk, which focussed on how Harlan used a variety of cinematic techniques to provoke a mixture of shame, disgust and other visceral emotions in the viewer. Daniel was reluctant to see any links between LF’s novel and the Harlan film, considering them distinct cultural products. It should be noted, however, that Goebbels’ enthusiasm for the Harlan project was undoubtedly driven by the wish to produce a film that German cinemagoers would construe as a direct response to Feuchtwanger’s novel.]
